Split Second Design Worksheet

1. The way an audience perceives the play is shaped by the choice of performance venue, as well as the set that is designed for the play. Indeed, all the elements that you see and hear during a performance are bound to shape your perception of the play. Which of the following venues do you think can best meet the needs of the play?

Porcenium stage would be best. The dramatic actions should be shown in a central light and since the show is actually a smaller scaled production, the Porcenium stage would be best suited for it. This way the audience can see the full motions and expressions of the audiences.

Choose one of the follow and explain why you have selected this kind of venue. proscenium, arena, thrust, flexible

2. What are some of the challenges posed by the play on the stage design team?

Large moments in the play where actors make critical, yet almost unseeing decisions. The audience needs to be able to see the actors make their conscious decisions. Another aspect is that the scenes change rapidly, and must be able to accommodate different scene sets at a quick change.

3. Choose a character from the play and suggest how she/he should be dressed. In what ways do you think the costume would help accentuate his/her character? Be sure to indicate which scene you have selected to costume that character. You might even upload a picture of the kind of dress you think would be suitable for that character to wear.

Willis because he is more dressed as a street character. You could easily make him appear as though he's a character that lives off the street, so he should have a worn baseball hat, maybe a messy t-shirt that has seen some use. Probably should represent some popular aspect of the plays time. He should have fitted jeans that have holes in them, like someone cared too much about them to get rid of them. His shoes have to be tennis shoes that have seen some years on him. .

4. Given the content of the play, how might the lighting design help further the mood of the production? Move thru the play scene by scene to provide a possible progression.

Act I
Scene 1: Bright lights to represent a bright day. They should get darker as the scnee progresses to accent the mood.
Scene 2-3: Go for natural light that has a dim factor to it.
Scene 4: Since it's a night scene, make the lights dimmer, showing an evening hue to outline the inside of the apartment.
Act II
Scene 1: Have the Apartment lights grow slowly to represent the feelings the main character has by telling the truth and being forthcoming.
Scene 2: Near dark lights that represent the failure that came from the last scene.
Scene 3: Lights focus on Val, leaving his counter-part in the darkened dim.
Scene 4:Sporadic lighting that shows the others arguments.
Scene 5: Knowing the context, the lights should continually fade to black.

5. Suggest music or sound effects that might be used to accentuate the mood or atmosphere of the play and the transitions between parts of the play. You might even choose to upload music or sound effects that you think are suitable for the play, or moment in the play, or as preshow music or transitions from one scene to another.

You need to create ambiance, so making natural sound for the scenes is a must. sounds that represent city life: loud neighbors with the apartments, city sounds from the city (focused from an open door, perhaps), etc. For this production, go for natural sounds. Nothing out of the ordinary should be used.
